Please note: CSCS stopped accepting new applications for the Basic Skills Green CSCS card on September 3rd, 2018.
The initial purpose of the basic skills green CSCS card was for new hire and trainees, as well as other junior workers that have not yet obtained anything higher than a level 1 NVQ. It showed that the cardholder had passed health and safety training, as well as the basic site skills required for safe work.
CSCS has now stopped accepting new applications, however, they have kept the window for renewals open a little longer, and you have until December 3rd, 2018, to renew your card. If you need to apply for a new card, there are several potential routes you are able to take, and you can learn more about them further down the page.
The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) have determined that the current training qualification for the basic skills green card aren’t actually in accordance with those set by the CLC. The requirements are too low, and so the retirement of this card is a great way to get trainees and other junior workers to obtain a higher level NVQ/SVQ so that they are more knowledgeable when they start at their site. This should, in turn, also help to reduce the number of on-site accidents that occur each year.
Whether you need a new application, or your current card runs out after the deadline, you need to know the alternative options in order to apply for the correct CSCS card for your skills and work type. Here are the four options available to you:
An entry-level card that has been specifically designed for those in the construction industry that is working as a labourer. It also offers some leeway when deciding which specific trade you wish to pursue.
To qualify for this card, you will need to have the QCF level 1/SCQF level 4 health and safety in construction qualification, as well as have passed the CITB HSE test within the last two years. This card is valid for five years before it needs to be renewed.
This card shows that you meet all of the legal requirements to practice your trade, and that you have the necessary qualifications o do so. If you have completed an employer-sponsored apprenticeship, this is the card you need.
In order to be eligible for this card, you will need to possess the technical qualifications that are relevant to your trade or the academic qualifications. You must also have passed the CITB HSE test within the last two years. This card is valid for five years before it needs to be renewed.
If you are looking to start your career in construction, this the first card you need, and it will show that you have all of the required health and safety awareness for when you are on the site. This card offers the first steps toward your construction career.
In order to qualify for this card, you must be on an accredited apprenticeship, as well as be able to provide proof and confirmation that you are currently on the course. Unless you are exempt, you will also need to have passed the CITB HSE test within the last two years. This card is valid for six months and cannot be renewed.
This is a level up from the apprentice card as it will show that you also hold a number of relevant qualifications in addition to the health and safety tests. It also demonstrates that you are taking the required courses for the trade that you wish to enter once you complete your training and studies.
This allows you to get a level 2 or 3 NVQ/SVQ if you do not have one already, and is for those who have just started as a construction trainee. Once again, you must have a valid CITB HSE test, and this card is valid for five years. However, it cannot be renewed once it expires.
