The Carpentry NVQ is split into Levels – Level 2, 3 and 4. Each Level denotes that the holder of the NVQ has achieved a higher industry standard of competence in the Carpentry trade, and in the roles and responsibilities that surround it.
Within each Carpentry NVQ Level, the participant will be required to pass a number of mandatory modules. They’ll also be asked to choose some optional modules to make up their points tally for a passing grade.
What Types of Carpentry NVQ are There?
There are four Carpentry NVQ types currently available to UK Carpenters. These are:
• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations – Site Carpentry
• Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations – Site Carpentry
• Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Senior Crafts – Carpentry
You’ll notice that the Site Carpentry NVQ is repeated in Levels 2 and 3, whereas the Structural Post and Beam Carpentry NVQ is only available as Level 2. This is because the candidate passing Level 2 in Structural Post and Beam Carpentry will have demonstrated all the skills required to master this part of the trade – while Site Carpentry can be performed at a higher level of expertise.
The Site Carpentry NVQ
The Site Carpentry NVQ contains mandatory elements across two Levels. At Level 2, the NVQ requires that candidates are assessed in:
• Efficient Working Practices in the Workplace
• Moving and Handling Resources in the Workplace
At Level 3, the Site Carpentry NVQ has the following mandatory modules:
• Installing Second Fixing Components in the Workplace
• Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace
• Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
• Confirming the Occupational Method of Work in the Workplace
Some of the mandatory modules in the Site Carpentry NVQ Level 3 also occur as optional modules in Level 2.
Optional Carpentry NVQ Modules Explained
A candidate only needs to take one optional Carpentry NVQ module for Level 2, and one for Level 3. The optional module ensures that you have achieved a total pass mark sufficient to be awarded the NVQ you are studying for. Unlike the mandatory modules, all of which must be passed, you don’t have to pass your optional module. If you choose one and fail you may replace it with a different one, or ask to take it again.
The Relationship Between the Carpentry NVQ and Health and Safety
You’ll notice that all of the mandatory modules for the Level 2 Carpentry NVQ are to do with health and safety, or working efficiently, rather than actual skills. The optional module you choose in Carpentry NVQ Level 2 will be the first skilled part of your qualification.
When you start on your qualification route health and safety is a primary concern, hence the emphasis. If you have passed a Carpentry NVQ Level 2 within the last two years, it may grant you an automatic pass for a CSCS Health, Safety and Environment Test.
